Strandpaviljoen De Schaar
It all started when Kees van der Wekken and his father walked ponies on the beach of Westenschouwen in the 1960s. A pony ride for a few cents.
Horses and tourists have always kept the Van der Wekken family busy. Kees was always active in the horse trade and now his son Paul van der Wekken is doing that again with his son Keesjan.
Later in 1993, Kees and Paula van der Wekken started a beach club. Beach pavilion De Schaar used to be a cozy little white tent. A few years later Kees and Paula were able to buy a beach tent in Scheveningen: 'The Blue Lagoon'. They set up this beach tent in Westenschouwen. This was actually the second pavilion at that place next to the stairs and later the third pavilion came as it is now!
The passion and drive of our profession is an important aspect in our company. Of course together with our employees! We are always 100% there for everyone.
Every year we had to tear down the tent and store it in containers and put it in storage during the winter months. From March we were allowed to start building again and we could open the doors. In 1999 we got a year-round permit and then Kees had a new pavilion built, beautiful of course!
We now had more capacity and were able to offer extensive menus. The needs of the guests
also changed and it was a great challenge for us to spoil the guests with a lobster, fresh mussels and much more goodies. It was so much fun that we went to the fish auction every week and bought and processed the fish ourselves, it couldn't be fresher of course!
Paul and Monica joined the business in 2006. Kees and Paula took it a bit easier. The concept remained the same and today it is still fun and good to stay at De Schaar!
Now in 2020 it is up to the children. Keesjan and Mariëlle want to continue the family business that now consists of two pavilions and 40 beach cabins in Westenschouwen. Sand and Pepper is also part of it but we rented it out.
That is a good prospect!
